Traveling has always been a defining part of my life, a form of escape, discovery, and self-care. From the cobbled streets of Prague to the piss-smelling streets of Paris, I reveled in solo travel, finding solace in the rhythm of my own footsteps and the unplanned whims of my curiosity. But life, as it often does, has changed. Now, my travels are shared with my husband, a gentle soul whose pace aligns with mine, and our 7-month-old son, whose presence adds a layer of wonder to every destination.

I feared, as many new mothers do, that parenthood would confine us, or that we would lose our ability to wander freely. But with our little family, I’ve come to realize that the way we travel has shifted, not diminished.

Last June, as the early summer sun started its daily round, we set out on a day trip to Eibsee, a serene alpine lake nestled in the foothills of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. This trip was different, of course—there were strollers and baby bags, and we planned more cautiously than in my solo-travel days. But as we approached the crystal-clear waters of Eibsee, framed by dense forests and snow-capped peaks, I knew that this new phase of life offered a different kind of adventure: one grounded in shared experiences, patience, and a newfound appreciation for places I might have once overlooked.

Walking Around the Lake Duration: The loop around Lake Eibsee is about 7 kilometers and typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete at a leisurely pace. It took us about 3 1/2 hours with a stroller and two stops: for lunch and for breastfeeding.

These figures are estimates and can change, so it’s advisable to check local information when planning your trip.

The Best Time to Visit Eibsee

Eibsee, located near the town of Grainau, is a gem that sparkles in every season. That said, the best time to visit largely depends on what you seek. For us, traveling with a 7-month-old, we aimed for early summer, when the crowds thin and the weather remains mild. September and early October are ideal if you want to enjoy the brilliant fall colors, cooler temperatures, and fewer tourists.

The summer months of June through August can be tempting, especially for those who want to swim or enjoy water sports on the lake. However, with a baby in tow, the cooler months offered a quieter, more serene atmosphere, which made the experience feel more intimate.

Winter, though cold, transforms Eibsee into a wonderland, perfect for snow-lovers. The lake freezes over, and the nearby Zugspitze draws winter sports enthusiasts. But for parents with young children, like us, the icy paths can be tricky to navigate, particularly with a stroller.

Spring, on the other hand, breathes new life into the region, with blooming flowers and clear skies, though you may still find patches of snow lingering.

Ultimately, we chose early summer for the cooler air, vibrant scenery, and the sense of tranquility that permeated the landscape.

What to Pack for Your Day Trip to Eibsee

Packing for a trip with a baby is an entirely different game, as every parent quickly learns. While my previous travels might have involved throwing a camera and a book into a backpack, traveling with a baby requires a meticulous list.

Stroller: Since we intended to walk around the lake, a sturdy, all-terrain stroller was essential. The paths around Eibsee are mostly well-maintained, but there are sections with gravel or uneven terrain, so a stroller with good suspension is key.

Baby Carrier: For the more adventurous parts of the trail or if the stroller proved to be too cumbersome, a baby carrier was a lifesaver. Our son loved being close to us, and it allowed us to explore a little more freely.

Diapers and Wipes: Never underestimate how many you’ll need. We packed more than we thought necessary and were grateful we did.

Snacks and Baby Food: Depending on your baby’s feeding schedule, pack enough food for the day. While there are a few places to eat near Eibsee, having baby-appropriate snacks and food on hand made the day much smoother. We did when the little one was barely five months old and he was fully breastfed. So the snacks and water was primarily for us.

Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Summer in the Bavarian Alps can be unpredictable. Light layers are essential. We packed jackets, raincoats, and a raincoat for the stroller, just in case. Thankful for my husband who did the planning and packing. We would have been drenched otherwise.

Sun Protection: Even on cooler days, the mountain sun can be intense. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for both baby and parents are a must.

Is Eibsee Stroller-Friendly?

family travel guide to eibsee

Before we left, I had scoured the internet for information on whether the paths around Eibsee were stroller-friendly. I found mixed reviews, so we decided to see for ourselves. The answer, as with many things in life, is: it depends.

The main loop around the lake, which stretches about 7 kilometers, is largely stroller-friendly. Much of the path is flat and wide, making it easy to navigate. There are, however, some parts with gravel, roots, or small inclines. We managed with our all-terrain stroller. There was a part when I baby carried the little one for a change of scenery.

For parents with younger children, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of places to stop, rest, and take in the views. The lake is dotted with benches and picnic spots, offering ample opportunities for breaks, diaper changes, or simply letting your baby stretch and play.
